This year children from Kuwinda slum in Nairobi, Kenya will be visiting Blewbury as part of their debut UK tour. The performance will be a vibrant mix of music & dance covering folk and traditional music from all over Kenya and Uganda. The children, many of whom are orphans, come from very poor and under privileged backgrounds.

As in past years there will be an exit collection with all profits from the tour going to support development projects in Kuwinda.

‘Underneath the Floorboards.

In Cooperation with Ballet Lorent, the Players are presenting a dance workshop for 3 to 5 year olds in the Methodist Chapel on Monday 25 June. This is based on Ballet Lorent’s sell-out show Underneath the Floorboards (see www.balletlorent.com) and will be an enjoyable and energetic experience for little ones and accompanying parents. We are running a workshop for the Playgroup in the morning and an open workshop for others at 4.00 pm. Tickets for the open workshop are £3.50 per child and available from the Post Office.’

Paul Clayton is an Actor and Director and corporate trainer. He has worked in all areas of TV as an actor – Coronation Street, Peepshow, Wire in the Blood, My Family etc etc. He has directed all over the UK including at The Watermill at Newbury, The National Youth Theatre, Nottingham and Salisbury Playhouse and many others.

Are you a friend of Blewbury Players?

What are the advantages?

An annual event at Oak Hall House. In February, the Friends enjoyed a reading by the Players of an adaptation of Dickens’ The Haunted Man.
Priority booking for a minimum of two tickets for most events and performances.
Special event on opening night of the summer production at Orchard Dene Garden Theatre. Friends are served food and drink, before the play and during the interval, and are also invited to meet the director and cast.
Friends also receive regular newsletters and updates.

This is all for an annual subscription of £15. This is much appreciated help which has provided resources towards the costs of many things including the maintenance of the garden theatre, improving cast changing facilities, and various technical equipment.

Thank you to Julie Heatherington who has done such a wonderful job of being secretary to the Friends and has now decided to step down. Tracy Silverthorne has kindly agreed to take on this role. If you would like to become a friend please contact her via our Friends page.

Under Milk Wood – too good to miss!

The Blewbury Players are producing an abridged adaptation of Under Milk Wood directed by Joanna Laugharne. All performers, stage managers, technicians, front of house are young people (aged 10-17) from local schools with adult mentors. There have been weekly workshops and rehearsals since the start of the year. Come along and see!

Friday 30th & Saturday 31st March at 7.30 p.m.
in Blewbury Village Hall
Doors open at 7pm

February Update

We can now confirm She Stoops to Conquer, by Oliver Goldsmith, as the summer production, a brilliant and very well-known play with a splendid cast of characters, to be directed by Lydia Milman Schmidt, introduced to us by Laura Baggaley, our Director Emeritus, who directed The Winter’s Tale for us in 2007 and Twelfth Night in 2009.

Auditions will be on 25th & 26th February. Please contact Peter Saunders on 850245 to arrange an audition. Small and big parts for adults of all ages and we anticipate some parts for children of about 12 or older. We also welcome local people who would like to be involved with other non-acting roles such as wardrobe, scenery, construction, etc…..

A new adaptation of Great Expectations by the well-known children’s author Julia Golding (better known to us as Julia Saunders) has been postponed till next year, the 201st anniversary of Dickens’s birth rather than the 200th!

Workshops, rehearsals and lots of fun & hard work are underway for the youth production of Under Milk Wood directed by Jo Laugharne. This will be performed on 30th & 31st March in Blewbury Village Hall. Box Office opens at the Post Office on 3rd March. This production is going to be very special as it involves children from school years 5 -12 working together. Youngsters are taking on roles in stage management, lighting, front of house and finances with adult mentors.
